Well, my wife and I had this very discussion recently, and it boils down to this: Jesus himself was a Jew, and what good Jewish boy doesn’t listen to a request from his mother?

Catholics do not “pray to” Mary, but request that Mary pray for them. What makes us unique is that in trying to see the world through the eyes of Christ, we look at his family with the same love he possessed.

Because we are sinners and not worthy to be in his presence, Mary will polish our prayers before she delivers them. A son will listen to his mother before anyone else. Like Jesus is our mediator to God

Why do we ask others here on Earth to pray for us? Same reason we ask Mary. Plus, who better to ask Jesus for favor than his Blessed Mother? Don’t you listen to and honor YOUR mother? Would Jesus do less? We can and do pray directly to Jesus, often, but we also ask for intersession from our loved ones here on Earth, our Saints in heaven and most especially, our Blessed Mother!

I will simply say why I pray to Mary. As a mother, I know she hears and understands my pain. When I pray to the Holy Mother, I know she holds special love in the hearts of God, the Father and God, the Son. She shares with my humble, sinful self, the joy of bringing forth a child and the pain of knowing that her strength alone can not fight the world or protect Him from what’s to come.
When I pray to Mother Mary for my children, I too surrender them to God and His will and like her, do so with a heart full of faith.

One of St. Therese’s sisters once used the following analogy when Therese asked her if everyone would be equally happy in Heaven. Her sister filled a cup and a thimble with as much water as each could hold, and then asked Therese which of the two was more full. The amount of love for God and unity with Him that we achieve on this earth will determine our “place” in Heaven. As the only sinless creature, Mary’s place in Heaven is an exalted one. Therefore, why would I not ask her to join her most efficacious and perfect prayers to my weak and puny ones? My prayers alone might be adequate, but with hers added to them, they are so much more powerful!
